Finding an immigration attorney

Ways to find an attorney

In the U.S., there are thousands of attorneys who specialize in immigration law. Keep in mind, however, that there are many sub-domains of immigration law, so it will be important that your attorney understands the requirements of H-1B immigration law.

In the best case, your employer or your university has developed a relationship with an immigration attorney with whom you can work with.

Alternatively, you can look up attorneys using various resources:

AILA - American Immigration Lawyers Association

The AILA is a member organization for attorneys who are interested in immigration law.  Attorneys on the site must be members, have insurance, be certified with a state Bar Association, and have taken continuing legal education classes within the last year (source)

Super Lawyers

Super Lawyers uses a "patented selection process that involves peer nominations, independent research and peer evaluations" (source) and lists respected attorneys in different domains, of which immigration law is one.

Avvo

An online marketplace for legal services, Avvo lists over 25,000 attorneys on its website and claims that over 97% of lawyers are listed on its website.  Many of these attorneys practice immigration law.
